Summer has arrived and it’s time to hit the road for that long-awaited vacation. Unfortunately, summer months have the highest percentage of burglaries.

Before leaving home, it’s important to understand what personal items are covered under your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy. Most homeowner’s insurance policies cover personal property, such as: furniture, jewelry, clothing, movies, linens, appliances, silverware, and electronics. However, these policies may also contain limitations leaving large gaps in your coverage.

Additional coverage may be available for purchase where limitations apply. Speak with your agent to determine if replacement cost coverage is available. This optional coverage may help with the cost of repair or replacement of belongings. Without an additional replacement cost policy, you may only receive the depreciated value of your lost or damaged items. It’s good practice to keep a current home inventory list. If you lose an expensive camera while on vacation, or if a thief makes off with your laptop, you will have proof of ownership. A home inventory list helps to speed up the claims process.

To understand more about what limitations and optional enhancements are available with your individual homeowners policy, contact your local, licensed agent.
